At least ten qualified voters are required to originate an initiative petition. The anti-gay marriage petition was sponsored by thirty including Walter and Kathleen Weld of Dover, MA.

Thank you SO much for what you are doing. As I read the names I started to shake and feel physically sick: I have known Kathy and Wally Weld all of my life - I grew up in Dover - Kathy and I went to school together - our families have been friends literally for generations - I am horrified by what they have done. Our families have had summer houses in the same cove on Cape Cod for decades and I know that they witnessed (from across the harbor) the wedding of my partner and I there two years ago and must know that we were legally married last year. I was just at a party at their house on July 4th - I could go on and on.
Once I collect my thoughts (and after I finish venting my emotions) I will write to them about their signatures. It may not be possible for them to rescind their own signatures, but maybe it would give them a little pause in actively recruiting others to recognize that what they are doing directly affects friends and neighbors. Also, I know that there are two gay people (not a couple) living NEXT DOOR!! to them on Cape Cod - I will be contacting them as well.
I think that what you have done is extremely courageous and very important. I have already alerted my whole family (my brother and daughter are also gay, BTW) to consider a response from us all. Please let me know how I and others can support you.
